How-to’s

Excellence Creme® Appl. Instructions
Excellence Creme® Appl. Instructions
Before You Color
  • Do a skin allergy test by cleansing a quarter sized area of skin in the bend of your elbow. Using a plastic utensil, mix a small amount of the formula and apply a small portion of it to your skin.
  • Do not wash test area for 48 hours to see if reaction occurs. If there is any irritation call a doctor before coloring your hair.
  • Do a strand test by applying color to a small section of hair before covering your whole head. This will give you an idea of how long to keep the color mixture on in order to achieve your desired results and gives you a nice preview of what your hair will look like.
  • Apply Excellence Creme® Pre-Color Protective Treatment
  • Before coloring: protect fragile ends and help prepare hair to accept color evenly.
  • To open tube, twist round tip so that it breaks off.
  • Massage product into dry ends before coloring.
  • Avoid the root area.
  • Wait for 2 minutes.
  • Do not rinse.
  • Continue with mixing color and application instructions.
  • Mix

    Step 1
Put on colorist gloves and twist off the tip of the Developer (1) bottle cap before beginning. Remove cap from bottle.

    Step 2
Pierce the opening of the Color Creme (2) tube completely with the point provided in the top of the cap. Do not point either end of the tube toward the face while opening or using. Squeeze entire contents of Color Creme (2) into the Developer (1) bottle and recap the bottle.

    Step 3
Place your finger over open tip, point away from your face and shake thoroughly until mixture is totally blended. Developer bottle is now your haircolor applicator bottle. CAUTION: Do not squeeze or put pressure on Color Creme tube until you have pierced the tube opening completely. Use care in working with tube contents. Contact between contents and eyes may cause blindness. NOTE: Never leave the tip of the developer bottle unopened after mixing – the container may burst. Use immediately and do not save any unused mixture.

    Apply

    Touch-Up Application
Choose a Touch-Up Application if: You color every 4- 6 weeks with the same shade. Important: To achieve the most even color results from root to tip, apply product to new uncolored growth root area, wait 20 minutes. Then apply to rest of the hair for 10 minutes. Follow instructions below carefully for best results.

    Apply to Root Area

    Step 1
Make 1/4-inch partings throughout your dry, unwashed hair with regular applicator tip. Apply color onto new growth root area until completely saturated.

    Step 2
Leave color on new growth root area for 20 minutes.

    Step 3
Resistant grays: leave mixture on hair an additional 10 minutes.

Apply to Rest of the Hair

    Step 1
Apply remaining product to the rest of the hair. Make sure all the hair is completely saturated. Use the Easy Color Comb for easier application, remove applicator tip and attach comb on protective creme developer (1) bottle.

    Step 2
Pile hair loosely on top of your head.

    Step 3
Let develop for an additional 10 minutes.

    Rinse Out
When time is up, add a small amount of warm water to the hair and lather color mixture through the hair. Rinse until water runs clear.
    Condition & Recondition
Apply half the tube of Conditioner (3) through hair. Leave on for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Style as usual. Use the other half of the Conditioner (3) two weeks after you color.
    All-Over Application
    Choose All-over Application if:
  • You have never colored your hair.
  • You have not colored in three months or longer.
  • Apply

    Step 1
Attach regular applicator tip onto the protective creme developer (1) bottle.

    Step 2
Make 1/4-inch partings, apply product onto dry, unwashed hair until hair is completely saturated and color mixture is evenly distributed.

    Step 3
Pile hair loosely on top of your head.

    Timing
    Leave on for 30 minutes.
    Rinse Out
When time is up, add a small amount of warm water to the hair and lather color mixture through the hair.
    Allergy Test
It’s essential to perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before you color your hair. This is the rule even if you’ve previously used a haircolor product. Allergies can develop suddenly, even though you’ve been coloring your hair for some time. Skin allergy test instructions are included in the instructional guide inside your box of haircolor.
    What’s Permanent Haircolor?
Changes the natural color of hair and does not wash out. Generally lightens hair up to two levels and easily covers gray.

    Before You Color
    Tips for getting ready
    Pamper Your Locks
When your hair is in top condition, the color will be more predictable, “take” more easily, look more dimensional, and last longer. To get ready for coloring, indulge your hair with a deep-conditioning treatment a few days before you process it. This is especially important if your hair is naturally dry. Conditioner will help protect your locks from chemical damage and will infuse them with softness and healthy shine. Continue with EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care throughout your color cycle to protect your new shade and to hydrate your locks.
    Keep Natural Oils In
Wash your hair the day before, not the day of, coloring. Doing this enables the natural oils in your scalp to act as a buffer when you are applying haircolor or lightener.
    Know the Chemistry
If you just colored your hair but want to change your look, it’s best to wait at least two weeks before coloring again. This period gives your hair a break from the chemicals and helps prevent damage; it also gives you an opportunity to condition and deep-treat your hair before another application.
    Henna and Haircolor
If your hair has been colored with henna, it’s best to wait until it grows out completely and is cut off before coloring it with permanent, chemically based haircolor. Applying haircolor over henna-colored hair can produce unpredictable results. Henna is not compatible with chemically based haircolor.
    Relaxer, Texturizer, or Perm
If your hair has been relaxed, texturized, or permed, wait two weeks before applying haircolor again. Also, read the L’Oréal product instructions to learn of any cautions or tips.
    Be Prepared
Before you start, make sure to read and follow all the instructions on product packaging. Perform a skin-allergy test 48 hours before you are planning to apply haircolor, even if you’ve never had an allergic reaction to haircolor. New allergies can develop suddenly, without warning. Do a strand test by applying color to a small section of hair before covering your whole head. This will give you an idea of how long to keep on the color mixture in order to achieve your desired results. It will also give you a preview of what your hair will look like.

    Colorants & How They Work
    Colorants & How They Work
An inside look at the science of haircolor
All permanent and nonpermanent haircolors are made up of two basic ingredients: a developer and colorants. But how do they actually work? Take a crash course on the coloring process and find out how L’Oréal formulas give you gorgeous, lasting color.
    Developer
The developer is an oxidizing agent. It activates the colorants and allows them to penetrate the hair cuticle, creating just the right tint. If you are lightening your hair, the developer activates the lighteners as well as the colorants.
    Colorants
The colorants are pigments that infuse your hair with color. By reacting with the developer, the colorants are able to separate and coat your locks. All permanent and nonpermanent haircolors can darken and change your tone; however, only permanent colors can also lighten your natural color.
    Conditioner
All L’Oréal haircolors provide you with a deeply nourishing conditioner. These protect the hair from breakage and dullness. They also help seal in your color to make it last. Conditioners are important to boost hair’s manageability while adding shine and bounce to your newly colored strands.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll like it better if you order on line, January 29, 2012

I love this particular color. It is difficult to find though. When done right, this color is a rich, cool, silvery brown that transforms grey streaks into golden (not red) highlights that look great. This is the color that my colorist used to use and I was always disappointed when I tried to color my own hair. Then, since the color is so hard to find in drugstores, I ordered on Amazon. The product arrived within a couple of days and the color was amazing, just like my colorist used to get. I guess because the chemicals are nice and fresh (the way the salon receives it) the color was complete and rich. It also lasted twice as long as when I tried to do it myself. This is a great color and you should order on Amazon to get it fresh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware of 20 volume developer in boxed color kits!, July 26, 2012

This review is from: L'Oreal Paris Excellence Creme, Triple Protection Color Crme , Mocha Ash Brown, Level 3 , 1 Application (Misc.)
All boxed color comes with 20 volume developer (i.e., peroxide). The amount of peroxide in it will continue to lighten your hair each time you color, but you won't see the bleached-orange-brassy color your hair has turned until the colored dye wears off (usually 2 months after you use a boxed dye kit). I have medium ash brown hair, naturally, but every ash brown boxed dye kit I try would make my hair RED (and make me terribly mad). Ask anyone who is trying to achieve an ASH color...they DO NOT want to end up with RED hair!!! Yet, that's what many women get, time after time with boxed color kits. After a lot of Googling over the past few days I found out that the strong developer that comes in boxed kits is to blame (not the color itself).

So, I ordered two boxes of the 5AB (a=ash, b=blonde?) ash mocha brown from Amazon--I have a lot of hair (past my shoulders). Then I went to Sally's and bought a bottle of 10 volume developer and threw away the boxed kit's 20 volume... Read more

    5.0 out of 5 stars I like it!, July 21, 2012
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: L'Oreal Paris Excellence Creme, Triple Protection Color Crme , Mocha Ash Brown, Level 3 , 1 Application (Misc.)
I had a terrible red hair color and my hair still had the bad orange blond left from the bleaching process, so I wanted to dye my hair a color close to my natural color. It actually worked, now my hair is brown and the red is covered, but I'm gonna buy a second box of this dye since my hair is thick and the back still needs to be colored more. I love this color, my hair is actually not damaged.
